ACAPULCO INVESTS IN AIRPORT ENHANCEMENTS

Mexico’s glamorous seaside resort town of Acapulco is upgrading its airport. Directors from Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) recently announced the construction of a spacious new passenger terminal at Acapulco’s General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport will begin this month.

The project is a welcome addition to Acapulco’s services, according to Pedro Haces, president of the Acapulco Destination Marketing Office. “We’re excited to see construction of a new airport passenger terminal,” he said “Acapulco’s visitors will appreciate our world-class facilities and ability to serve as a gateway to other cities and towns in Mexico’s Southwest region.”

The new terminal features an eco-conscious design and the latest in airport safety regulation. The building, to be located alongside the current terminal, was designed by TAX Arquitectura of Mexico City and will feature more than 194,000 square feet of space, nearly doubling the airport’s current facilities.

The new airport facilities will allow for arrival and departures to be separated, ultimately easing operations and increasing passenger flow. The design also provides much more space for modern amenities, technology and services which boost passenger comfort and make flying more enjoyable and safe. As a result, the new passenger terminal, representing an investment of nearly 30 million U.S. dollars, will have the capacity for 1.3 million passengers a year upon completion in 2018, 30 percent more than the current building.

The eco-friendly design aligns with Acapulco’s natural beauty while reducing environmental impact and improving safety. The new terminal will be more energy efficient with elevated design standards meeting the latest international guidelines for construction in seismic zones. “The new design and construction are of the highest quality and will ensure safe operations for passengers and staff,” said Porfirio González, OMA General Director.

The new passenger terminal complements other efforts to ensure Acapulco keeps abreast of the latest developments in tourist services. “The new terminal will support the promotion of Acapulco as a significant touristic destination in Mexico,” said Diego Quintana, OMA President. “Our investment represents a continued commitment to the future of Acapulco and the state of Guerrero.”
